Just like everyÂone else, we’re obsessed with all things TwiÂlight. So imagÂine our delight when we get to jet over to VanÂcouÂver, Canada, to watch the sequel being shot for ourÂselves! Here are all the behind-the-scenes secrets from the New Moon set (plus a few topÂless shots of the guys – well, we couldn’t resist)Â

DurÂing filmÂing, KrisÂten was very seriÂous about watchÂing her scenes being played back. ImmeÂdiÂately after finÂishÂing a scene, she would make her way over to the monÂiÂtors, and often covÂered the screen with her robe so that she could watch it alone. WonÂder what she thought about her kissÂing scenes with Robert PatÂtinÂson? If we were her, we’d defÂiÂnitely be wantÂing another take. And another. And another…
While we watched, cast and crew filmed scenes for Bella’s high school cafeÂteÂria at the David ThompÂson SecÂondary School in VanÂcouÂver. Weirdly, the school was being used at the time, so as soon as the bell went the corÂriÂdors filled with hunÂdreds of stamÂpedÂing stuÂdents headÂing for the gym to peer through the glass, desÂperÂate to get a glimpse of the famous cast.
Bella is pretty reckÂless in this movie, dirt-biking and jumpÂing off cliffs. But KrisÂten didn’t do her own stunts. ‘They wouldn’t let me!’ she comÂplains. ‘I wish I could. I got to jump off a litÂtle platÂform about 3ft high for the cliff scene. For the dirt bikÂing, I got pulled on a motorÂbike that had this big, dorky trainÂing wheel on it,’ she laughs.
LuckÂily, the birthÂday party scene where Bella cuts herÂself and vamÂpire Jasper (JackÂson RathÂbone) can’t resist the smell of her blood, wasn’t too gory on set. ‘VamÂpires don’t need a masÂsive amount of blood to get feisty,’ says Nikki Reed who plays RosÂalie. But JackÂson got so worked up durÂing the attack he knocked ElizÂaÂbeth Reaser (Esme) down and scared KrisÂten StewÂart. Rathbone’s co-stars had to physÂiÂcally restrain him durÂing the scene. ‘I was just going for it,’ he explains.
We caught TayÂlor LautÂner in a very uncomÂfortÂable harÂness attached to wires on a huge crane. The ex marÂtial arts chamÂpion did a lot of his own stunts, and would run, leap and fly 10ft in the air on wires – then stop with a painful-looking jolt. That’s when CGI makes him a wereÂwolf. ‘My charÂacÂter Jacob is the only wolf that can transÂform in mid-air, he just snaps and all his clothes fly off!’ TayÂlor says. We’ll look forÂward to that.
We couldn’t believe our eyes when we saw how much sweet litÂtle TayÂlor had bulked up to play Jacob in New Moon. His hot new body was the result of some seriÂous trainÂing, not to menÂtion a hardÂcore diet regime. ‘The hardÂest thing for me was the eatÂing,’ he tells us. ‘I was on 4,000 caloÂries a day and had to shove as much food in my body as posÂsiÂble, and hit the gym five days a week. Even now my trainer is always bringÂing me snacks between shots.’ We spied TayÂlor using resisÂtance bands to do strength-training exerÂcises in his downÂtime to keep those musÂcles pumped.
In New Moon, Edward steps out into the sunÂlight in order to expose his sparkling skin and thus the VolÂturi vamÂpire clan to the world. And in this film, Rob’s sparkly skin speÂcial effect will be much betÂter than the last one. DirecÂtor Chris Weitz says, ‘It was very subÂtle in the first film. This time we made a 3D model of Rob, so we were able to map every move he made and build an effect that really feels like the light is comÂing from inside him, and there will be lens flare, as if you were lookÂing at a diaÂmond with the sun shinÂing on it.’ Watch out for that 3D model of Rob for sale on eBay soon!
In this scene from the film, TayÂlor really had to sufÂfer. ‘I was shirtÂless, only wearÂing shorts. It was 35°F (2°C) outÂside and I was being drenched in water that was so ice-cold, I was absolutely freezÂing. Thank God the scene was only four minÂutes long.’ But Tay, we’re eterÂnally grateful.
For the scene where Bella and Jacob go on a date to the movies with the hapÂless Mike tagÂging along, The Old ParaÂmount TheÂatre in VanÂcouÂver was used for the exteÂrior shots. To our horÂror we disÂcovÂered these days the inside of the theÂatre is a lap-dancing club. They must have had to shoot the inteÂrior shots someÂwhere else…
The school basÂketÂball courts were home to wardrobe and make-up trailÂers, and as they walked to and fro, Rob and TayÂlor had minÂders shadÂing them with enorÂmous golfÂing umbrelÂlas to shield them from pryÂing camÂera lenses. Says a minÂder, ‘Paparazzi are always tryÂing to get on set dressed in camÂouÂflage, hidÂing in bushes, leapÂing out and disÂruptÂing shootÂing. It’s easÂier just to keep it quiet where Rob and TayÂlor are.’ We tell them the big brolÂlies are a bit of a giveaway.
In StepheÂnie Meyer’s book, the regal VolÂturi live in the ancient ItalÂian city of Volterra, a real town in TusÂcany, Italy. For the movie, the proÂducÂtion crew used MonÂtepulÂciano, an ancient walled city also in TusÂcany. But being medieval, the piazza and city hall gave the direcÂtor the amazÂing shot he needed for when Bella races across the founÂtain to save Edward.
The night shoots in Vancouver’s CapiÂlano Park ForÂest went on until around 4am, and the hardÂest scenes were Bella’s screamÂing nightÂmares about Edward. The crew recreÂated her entire bedÂroom in the midÂdle of the woods, KrisÂten had to sob and scream for hours, and while everyÂone else wrapped up warm, TayÂlor LautÂner spent most of the shoot with his shirt off. Shame.
The story of TwiÂlight is set in Forks, WashÂingÂton, the rainiÂest, most cloud-covered place on earth. As vamÂpires can’t go out in the direct sunÂlight withÂout their skin sparkling and drawÂing attenÂtion to themÂselves, this is a handy place to live. UnforÂtuÂnately, VanÂcouÂver was so sunny when we were there, Rob couldn’t shoot his exteÂrior scenes. ‘I’d be glintÂing,’ Rob laughs.

We spied Rob havÂing his famously boufÂfant hair given a quick trim on set. ApparÂently, this hapÂpened every week to 10 days while shootÂing the movie. Plus, he had his barÂnet re-styled on-set twice a day by New Moon hairÂstylÂist Thom McInÂtyre, to make sure it remained perÂmaÂnently in its sigÂnaÂture touÂsled state. Diva? Rob? No.
In the books, Jacob’s home is a red house, and the proÂducÂtion crew found the perÂfect wild locaÂtion in the midÂdle of Vancouver’s National ForÂest. Only probÂlem was, the house was green. ‘It was imporÂtant to the fan base to keep the red of Jacob’s house. They know it that way, and they wanted it that way. So we ended up paintÂing the whole house red to match the book.’ Hope the ownÂers liked it.
KrisÂten turned 19 while shootÂing New Moon and celÂeÂbrated by workÂing all day! LuckÂily the crew secretly planned a big birthÂday cake for her. She didn’t know a thing.
As TwiÂlight was shot in PortÂland, OreÂgon, and New Moon in VanÂcouÂver, British ColumÂbia, Bella’s house had to be taken down, moved to Canada, and rebuilt, piece by piece, both the inteÂrior and the exteÂrior. But it’s not quite the same as it was in the first movie. There’s a whole new bay winÂdow on the side of the house, so Jacob can climb up to her bedÂroom at night.
To kill time, the cast played catch between scenes as TayÂlor always has a footÂball with him. ‘As soon as I’m done filmÂing I’ll play catch with anyÂbody who will play catch with me,’ he says. ‘KrisÂten and I play catch all the time and she has a really good arm. She’s extremely accurate.’
KrisÂten nearly got hurt by one of the wereÂwolves. Alex Meraz, who plays Jacob’s tribe memÂber Paul (far left), got carÂried away and became aggresÂsive towards her in the scene in which Jacob introÂduces his pack brothÂers to Bella. Alex says, ‘The wolf pack stays up all night lookÂing for who’s killing peoÂple, so I thought it’d be a great idea to stay up for 10 days straight.’ When it came to the scene, he was screamÂing his lines and grabbed KrisÂten by the throat. ‘The proÂducÂers freaked out – no one touches Kristen!’
AshÂley Greene who plays Alice, the vamÂpire who can see the future, got to drive a real Porsche while shootÂing in Italy. ‘It was fun,’ says AshÂley. ‘I worked with a stuntÂman before driÂving it and learned how to do a bunch of things. Then I drove the Porsche in a scene and stopped about 2in from a wall!’
